The name came from my location: Tucson, Arizona. This site catalogues my collection, kimono kitsuke knowledge, events I go to in kimono, and sometimes I will add related Japanese art forms that I'm into including taiko.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03895707801128819066noreply@blogger.comBlogger240125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199286540506865420.post-85379240011693504132020-07-20T18:24:00.001-07:002020-07-20T18:28:00.795-07:00Social Distancing Party: 4th of July!!Happy Independence Day! No fireworks to watch this year but that doesn't mean you can't get together and have time fun. A good bottle of Italian wine helps! Plus a little take-out Indian food and salad, we made our own party. It was hot as usual but the light in the evening was perfect.
This is another vintage yukata, with a fabulous graphic quality to the design. Classic indigo and white is paired with a deep red Hakata obi and a bit of patriotic ribbon! Just add American flags and we were ready to party all night long.
I haven't run out of yukata yet, so let's do this! Another party at my friend's house way out in the desert. She has a covered patio, so it helps temper the heat.
I received a cute new "atomic cat" yukata obi and I paired it with this amazing vintage white momiji (Autumn leaf) yukata that is probably from the 1980's or 90's. It's crisp, heavy cotton, and I love the pattern. I bought the obi because of the black cats on it- I have a new black kitten named Varla, so it was very appropriate. I just love the kitties!
We will keep these parties up as long as it's not super hot. In the evening, it cools off a bit, which makes it bearable.
This yukata is probably from the 1990's or 2000's, so it's not that old. I love the lovely muted color palette of taupe, black, white with bits of dusty teal and rust. The colors seem more like autumn but the colors really meld well with the colors of the desert. It has an elegance to it that I like. I wore it with a lovely gold hanhaba obi from Ichiroya (Thank you Ichiroya!- I posted the image with the sign on Instagram) that I have had for years. It's one of my favorite hanhaba obi- the quality is amazing and despite that it's poly, you would never know. It's heavy fabric and is probably the perfect color- goes with almost anything. The leopard belt was a creative touch and because leopard goes with everything!
Another weekend with nothing to do during Covid, and another excuse for a get-together with take-out food, adult beverages, and some fun photos outside in the desert.

I wore a "new" vintage yukata for this social distancing happy hour at my friend's house. It's an unusual light aubergine color and seems to be from the 1980's. I absolutely love the funky sunflowers and it goes perfectly with my Circus tennis shoes, Sally Bass earrings and metal belt. I have a chance to catch up on my blog! My friend and I had another "social distancing happy hour party" on May 24th, which was over Memorial Day weekend.
It's yukata season, so I pulled out a yukata I bought from Ichiroya (Thank you Ichiroya!) years ago.
It's not my favorite yukata, and I haven't worn it for years. It's white, with pink hagi and blue yukiwa (bush clover and snow crystal) and some black in the weave. However, I needed to give it some love, so I sparked it up with pink and black accessories. This pink Hakata obi is another item that needs love; it's an odd size, too narrow to fold in half like a fukuro obi and too wide to wear as a hanhaba obi. I have to fold it down by a third in order to wear it. But it works really well with this yukata. Just add black haneri, black bunny geta and bunny tabi socks and I'm ready to drink wine on the patio with my friends!
Until next time,
This time it was at her house and she'd made a wonderful salad platter. We brought our own drinks and pizza this time. Outside of a Zoom meeting at work, this is the only times I see friends- on the patio. We usually switch off locations each weekend.

The yukata? An odori (dance) yukata, half white and half indigo and a deep red hakata obi. A fancy zig-zag haneri (collar), white studded belt and colorful sandals complete the cool, fresh look. The twisted aluminum earrings are by one of my favorite local jewelry designers (And my friend) Angela Rose. A classic look and really appropriate colors for Memorial Day, but why not now?
Thanks for looking.
This time, we met at my house. Another hot day requires a yukata, so I wore my vintage (70-80's?) yukata featuring hibiscus with yellow geta. I call it my 'red bean' yukata because of the color. I have a very open weave ro opened Nagoya obi that I was creative with- folding like a fan and belting it to create something new and fun. I have never worn this obi before and thought I didn't have anything to go with it until I saw the colors in the yukata! And of course leopard pretty much goes with everything. Let me know what you think!
My friend and I had another social distancing happy hour get together at her home this time on Saturday, May 2nd. It's starting to get hot here, so another yukata was in order. I put this outfit together rather quickly because of the heat! I wore the green butterfly yukata, same one as I wore to the Seattle obon last year. This time, I dressed it up with an orange heko (soft) obi and a zebra print belt and some fun jewelry by on of my favorite jewelry designers, Sally Bass.
The flowers adjacent to my friend's patio seemed to be the inspiration for my outfit....or was it the other way around?
Until next time!
Another weekend, another chance to wear kimono and have a drink with a friend. I have this yukata that I was going to sell....I'm not so sure now! It's just too amazing. Look at the sleeve length!

The design is very abstract and doesn't look too flowery and girly, which I also really like.

I've been experimenting with folding obi rather than tying and it's really nice- easy to do and looks really good when you have a fun belt! It's a trend I have seen on Instagram quite a bit, especially in Japan. One other advantage- it works well with a too-short obi.

I think it looks modern and very chic and looks best with an obi with contrasting colors or patterns on each side.

I wore western-style sandals this time, I think the yellow looks works well with the yukata. Plus they are more comfortable than my yellow geta.

This time I'm wearing a pale grey yabane pattern hitoe kimono (washable poly!) and a fabulous chuuya obi featuring a kingfisher catching a shrimp on one side.

The obi design is really amazing- very subtle colors of blues and gold-tan, a woven design. The other side is black with yellow and lime green shibori tie-dye, which looks like this.

There are various water plants, waves, and even a suggestion of shells and a fishing net depicted. I picked up some of the tan with a gold obiage; the obijime is blue and white stripe. Zori are grey-blue polka-dot with grey tabi sox. The haneri is from Ichiroya/Kimonotte and is actually for summer but I couldn't resit the fish and wave motif!
Enjoy,
So I postponed our event until the next weekend. And sadly, no kimono.
However, the next day (Easter Sunday), the weather was lovely. After a mildly strenuous walk in a local state park, we came home and our neighbor texted to stop by for a drink in the garden. Since this was quite spontaneous, I put a wonderful dochougi over my t-shirt and jeans rather than a kimono.
This Japanese jacket was a very special find. One side is ki-zome (yellow dye) Kihachijo (Woven on Hachijo Jima in Japan) vegetable dyed plaid silk on one side and a grey, red, and blue stripe silk on the other. Fully reversible, it has pockets on both sides. It's a fabulous jacket, like a haori but with different sleeves. I wear it quite a bit at work since the sleeves don't swing, it's easy to wear. It's one of my favorite Japanese clothing pieces! And it looks great with almost anything, including a concert t-shirt. And my black bandana!
Ciao ciao,
It was warmer this time, so I opted to wear a new wild zebra yukata from SalzTokyo. I wore it in the trendy new style: the obi isn't tied but it's folded and belted.
SalzTokyo yukata, zebra belt from Target, black and white/violet reverse hanhaba obi from LA's Japan Town, violet bangasa from an event in downtown Tucson. Delicious vegan tacquitos from Charrovida.
We had the social distancing happy hour party at my house this time, and the weather was also amazing! I got to wear another one of my newer kimono- a soft teal kasuri, hitoe (unlined) for spring.

Outfit details
Teal silk kasuri worn with a Taisho Roman era (1912-1926) chuuya obi featuring yuzen dye techniques. The modern wild mushroom obiage is from Kimonotte. A dark red and turquoise stripe haori brings out the teal and soft turquoise in the kimono and obi.
A friend and I decided to do a happy hour-social distancing party every weekend (Started March 21), alternating houses. It's easy: set small tables and a chair out for each guest on a lovely patio or garden, 6' or more apart. BYOB, picnic, etc. Play some music, chat, drink wine, etc. I decided it would be a kimono challenge, so I have 3 weekends in a row where I am wearing a kimono! The weather has been great- on the cool side and sunny, these parties have been perfect springtime events.
Enjoy the distancing!
Outfit details.
I'm wearing one of my newer acquisitions: an indigo-dyed cotton kasuri kimono with an asanoha (Hemp-leaf) motif. It's vintage, unlined, so a good choice for spring. The color is rich and the fabric is soft like your favorite pair of blue jeans. Obi is a vintage Nagoya, striped obiage from Kimonotte. The orange tsubaki (Camellia) pin was a gift from a friend's Japanese mother-in-law. It's made of chirimen silk. The blue bracelet is from Alexis Bittar.

Hi everyone.
I've had a chance to wear kimono twice in January- once for the Tucson Japanese Festival volunteer meeting and for the festival itself. I did some serious multi-tasking at the festival- I did a kimono dressing demonstration, played taiko, and helped dress people in yukata in the photo-booth! It was a wonderful event and seems to be growing. Hopefully it will be longer next year.

For the festival volunteer meeting: understated grey kimono with colorful floral vintage Meisen haori and black accessories. This kimono is new and washable poly. I'm also wearing statement jewelry here- a black polka dot bracelet and big chunky mixed metals ring and silvery earrings. Black and white striped tabi socks and red and black zori complete this casual look.
The Search is on!

A follow-up to my post I did a few years ago, What Not To Wear, I occasionally search for kimono online out of curiosity to see what shows up.

Try it- type in "Kimono" into you web browser (I'm using Duck Duck Go) and you will be presented with a plethora of kimono- but not all of them are really kimono. Below is an edited screen shot- my monitor is huge, so I have to chop it up a bit to make it fit, but you get the idea.

Some fakes or kimono-style jackets are difficult to spot, but if you click on an image and you end up on TopShop's website where they are selling something like this, then you know it isn't Japanese clothing. Unless you are looking for a cute, long embroidered jacket!

Enjoy the search.

Hi everyone!
I just got back from a trip to Seattle! It was a family trip and I didn't wear kimono much, only a yukata at the Seattle Obon at the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple. It's a wonderful community Obon, small but mighty! It took place in front of the temple, so the street was closed. It's a two-day event, and I went on Sunday. Apparently Sunday has slightly less people (more parking opportunities!) than Saturday. The only downside was it was unexpectedly hot and sunny- 88 degrees F and about 70% humidity! I was very glad I wore a yukata instead of the summer kimono I had considered bringing. I purposely choose the green and white ensemble for the reference to "Emerald City", a popular name for Seattle and it gives a feeling of coolness. At least visually!

I also met another kimono kitsuke enthusiast and we hit it off, even meeting up the next day for kimono shopping and lunch! Luckily, there were some indoor events in the temple gym, so we cooled off in there a bit, but only a bit- no airco and only ceiling fans. Luckily, we had our fans for dancing! I think I wore out my wrist fanning myself! It was a very sweaty day. We did get a little too much sun. Since Obon is a participatory event, I didn't get a ton of photos this time. It's more fun to eat roasted corn, shave ice, and dance!
I was fortunate enough to see Shidara again (This is the 3rd time!) in concert this year- they had a very short 3-city tour in the USA and my taiko group was one of the show producers, so they came to Arizona! If you have not heard of Shidara and you love taiko, please check them out on YouTube- they are the best taiko group in the world right now. You probably know those other big name groups, and this group is absolutely stunning- they play with heart, mind and soul- truly dedicated to their art form.
https://www.youtube.com/user/shidaratv

For this momentous event, of course I had to wear kimono! Since It's already warming up here, I decided to wear hitoe (unlined kimono) before May 20th- and the kimono I'm wearing is actually summer kimono, so it's a little bit sheer. It was supposed to be hot that day when I planned the outfit but luckily, it was a perfect spring day, barely 80 F in the afternoon and cloudy, so I was comfortable in my sha Nagoya obi featuring hagi (bush clover) and fuji (wisteria). The kimono might be hemp but I'm not entirely sure. It has a nubby weave almost like a coarse tsumugi.
After the show, some Phoenix friends and I went to a hip downtown restaurant called Penca and we had food and lovely cocktails. These photos were taken on the sidewalk out front.
Enjoy!
I took advantage of a fabulous spring day at the Johrei center and was inspired by the amazingly bright flowers: wild flowers, roses, cactus flowers and beautiful weather. My magical Meisen (Both kimono and haori are vintage Meisen) kitsuke is inspired by these colors!
I recently acquired a fabulous Meisen kimono recently that has a wonderful pattern of either gum drops or dragon scales depending on your perspective. (Or mood!). The sleeves are stylishly long, so it is likely a Taisho-era kimono.
I wore it at the Johrei Center last weekend to perform taiko with friends and coordinated it with a red Hakata obi and a fun obijime inspired by 1980's punk rock fashion. It was a gorgeous spring day, so we took some photos in their Japanese-inspired desert garden.
Underneath, I am wearing a vintage turquoise and red juban with an asanoha or hemp-leaf pattern.
Days later, I attended an evening taiko concert and wore the same Meisen kimono with a different obi- a an unusually patterned Hakata Nagoya obi that features stylized flowers, triangular shapes, and some metallic threads. It has a mysterious feel to it and a friend said the pattern looked southwest! The sparkly obijime adds a little bit more bling.

Another successful Phoenix Matsuri, even if the weather wasn't typical! This year marks the 35th anniversary of one of the top Japanese festivals in the USA!
Saturday morning of the two-day festival, we played taiko and it was cold! For Phoenix at least. It was 37F that morning when we drove to downtown Phoenix from the east side of town, and there was actual ice on our windshields! Being typical Arizonans, we didn't have ice-scraping tools! Luckily, we had various plastic cards and CD cases. There was even snow on the mountains north of Phoenix, so it was quite a weird scene.

However, with lots of hot beverages, many layers of clothing under our happi coats, and later, sunshine, we managed to play an excellent taiko set to kick off a weekend of taiko on the ASU stage.

The day before Matsuri, it snowed!

Sunday, it was a bit warmer, which meant kimono plus haori, plus wool kimono coat and other cold-weather accessories, especially in the morning. I discovered the virtues of legwarmers! They are great when it's cold, and they slip on over tabi easily and actually look kinda cool with zori.

Black leg warmers!

I wore my recently acquired Omeshi tsumugi kimono with the woven table lamp motif. It's a lovely kimono, a deep, rich, bitter chocolate brown with woven areas of red and off-white. The design is really quirky and fun. I wore my familiar cream colored Hakata obi and something new- a narrow leopard belt worn as an obijime.

The wool kimono coat in the above photo is a vintage men's wool kimono coat. You can tell it's a men's coat by the way the sleeve is attached. It's a fabulous coat, with classic menswear details, like a hidden button placket, pockets, and a pointed collar like a western topcoat. The flying squirrel sleeves are a bonus! It was the perfect weather to wear it most of the day, so I lucked out.

I've been busy- lots of taiko gigs scheduled for the next few months as well our own Japanese festival that we just celebrated on January 19th. I was able to do a kimono dressing demo (And played taiko later!) at the festival as part of one of the demonstrations of different art forms and crafts. I dressed a friend for a tea ceremony that was following my demo, so it worked out perfect. The demo was a great success, with standing room only! The festival was at the local Chinese Cultural Center, a wonderful location and it had two beautiful white marble lions at the entrance.
I wore my retro-modern pale grey kimono with a very vintage emerald green Nagoya obi featuring a rose and a new striped obiage from Kimonotte. It was very chilly in the morning when I arrived at the festival location, so I wore the yellow and purple shibori haori. This was the first time I had worn the green obi and I used one of my favorite tools to "tie" it: the obidomekanagu or obi clip. It's perfect for fragile obi as the fabric is not tied or twisted. It truly is an amazing tool for neat kitsuke and makes the obi easier to tie in my opinion.

A week later, we had a volunteer appreciation party for everyone that participated in the festival. I wore the pine needle komon with another "new" obi- a vintage chuya obi with a yellow and lime-green shibori kikko pattern on one side. I added another fabulous Kimonotte striped obiage and a leaf-patterned yellow and navy haori. This event was in the evening, so most of the photos were really dark. These are the best of the bunch!

It was colder than last year on New Year's Day, so I had to break out the bold red kimono coat, a cashmere scarf and leopard print velvet gloves! There was a casual tea ceremony after the service, which was lovely.
Happy 2019 everyone!
